Buffalo Bill Days

This weekend Levi and Milo got to spend some time alone at Gran and Grandpa's house.  On Saturday morning they took the boys into downtown Leavenworth to take part in the community festival called Buffalo Bill Days.  Thank you to them for watching the boys and for sharing these pictures.

I very much enjoyed having some time alone with Lucas but am a little sad that I missed this sight in person: the boys driving a miniature covered wagon pulled by miniature donkeys.

Apparently Milo wasn't thrilled about sitting up front.  His Grandpa held him and they took their ride in the back.

Let me say it again: MINIATURE DONKEYS PULLING A MINIATURE COVERED WAGON!  That tickles me to no end, for some reason.

I wonder what Milo is thinking here.  Perhaps, "Gran, will you buy me another cookie-on-a-stick??  It's been 5 minutes since my last snack and I'm STARVING." or maybe, "Hmmmm, donkeys that are miniature...I don't get it...sounds like something my Mama would find funny..."

A sack race!

I'm pretty impressed by this.  It's hard to race in a sack.

Levi had no trouble hitting the mallet hard enough to ring the bell.  I think all that hammering he's been doing is paying off.

"Grandpa, straight ahead!  I see kettlecorn!"

just enjoying the ride.

Holding tightly to his prize that Grandpa won for him.

"I don't know who Buffalo Bill is but I sure do enjoy his Days."

More games.

Face painting.  Levi was pretty excited about this.

Milo sat still enough to get his face painted, too.
We came to get the boys as they were getting up from nap time.  The first words out of Levi's mouth were, "Is it time to go back to Buffalo Bill Days?"

Where I Was

On that morning 10 years ago, I was on my way to work.  I was 24 and had a job as a structural engineer with a small consulting firm in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  At 8am (standard time), I was running a little behind and was about five minutes away from my office downtown.

In the first moment that I became aware something was wrong, I knew nothing of the planes or the towers.  The radio was tuned to its customary station and at 8 o'clock the jingle that played sang, "It's seven o'clock!" Then the dj announced the next song and it's artist but he sounded wrong, off somehow.  He didn't address the jingle mix-up either.  Those two things seem inconsequential but that's when I got a knot in my stomach.

Just as I was getting dropped off at the door, the dj made a brief statement about a plane crashing into the tower.  As soon as I got to my desk I went online to get more information.  I can still picture in my mind the screen shot of that first report.  In the lefthand corner was a small picture of a building with smoke billowing out of it and beside was a scant few paragraphs containing very few details.

Just minutes later the phones started ringing.  Spouses were calling.  Another plane.  The now familiar events started unfolding and were reported online, via radio, on tv.  It is strange to try and remember what it was like not to know the whole story.  I remember how they kept reporting on how many planes were still unaccounted for.  What would be next?

I was in the conference room with my co-workers in a small semi-circle standing around our tv (no flat screens back then) when the first tower collapsed, then the other.  The next month while visiting back home we drove up into to the Loop for the evening.  I stood looking up at the sky scrapers and literally shook to think of one falling completely down.  Ten years later, I still cannot fathom it.

Where were you?

Craftiness

The boys got a big envelope in the mail yesterday.  Levi was very excited to recognize his name on the front.  Inside was a note and a craft from Nana.

I could not find our glue sticks (things are much better but we're still not completely unpacked) and made do with some tacky craft glue.

He took things very seriously.

Carefully considering which rhinestone to use in decorating his garden.

How many Dickson men does it take to glue a flower?

Outdoors

The weather here has been beautiful.  We spent much of the morning outside enjoying it.

Levi worked for a long while with his construction equipment.

"Arg.  These branches are tricky."

"Mama, put the camera down and help me!"

Milo venturing closer and closer to Levi's play.  Milo won't stop until he's on top of Levi, grabbing at his toys prompting Levi to shout, "No! No! No, Baby!"

Next we played some soccer.  Milo is a bit fuzzy on the rules.  "Uh- what am I supposed to do now??"

At lightning speed he advances toward the goal.

"It will be easier to score if I pick the ball up.  Have you seen my legs?  They are adorable but not that long."

Milo tries to fool the defense with his signature 'two ball roll' maneuver.

While the goalie is distracted with one ball you throw the other one in.  Or, if you are Milo, you just pick up the other ball and wander over to the driveway.

Playing 'Hockstotch'

Milo is also fuzzy on the concept of Hopscotch/Hockstotch.

Giant Pre-schooler or tiny Hopscotch???  You be the judge.

I. Must. Get. My. Hands. On. Camera.

Ride 'Em, Cowboy

Fellow party-goer, Katie, sent me these pictures as my camera died right before the horse-riding started.  Thanks!

He was patiently saying, "cheeeeese" while she grabbed a few shots but obviously was ready to get going.

This is Pete the horse.  Quite a few years ago, my non-existent horse riding skills resulted in me plumeting off of Pete onto the very hard ground.  Levi quite enjoyed Pete so I've decided to let go of my grudge.

Milo didn't get on the horse but he was more than thrilled to get a turn wearing one of the helmets- just like the big boys.

Practicing his horse steering.

Double Party

Two special boys we know had a birthday party on Saturday and we were happy to get to celebrate with them.

You know it's going to be a fun party when there is a lasso involved.

Levi's first experience pinning the tail on anything.

Hanging out with Tim was a highlight for my boys.

Tim seemed to understand Milo's communication system of pointing and grunting.

Levi just roped a steer.

That's Kim on the right, our hostess with the mostess, with her sister.

This is the pictorial definition of 'frolicking'

The kids even got to ride Pete!

Levi, helmet on, ready for his turn around the pasture. Unfortunately just as he got on the horse my battery died and I didn't get any pictures of him and John riding.

Milo saw some of the bigger kids trying to climb the tree and thought he might be able to figure it out.  Also, note all the stickers on his shirt he 'talked' Tim into giving him.

Catch-Up

Levi experimenting on his trike.  Who needs a seat when you've got long legs?

The great room is slowly being cleared out.  There is lots of room to roam now.

The boys use their riding toys, trike, and scooter all over the first floor.  I did make the master bath suite a scooter-free zone as I did not appreicate getting my toes rolled over while brushing my teeth.

Ruby at our new water table.

I also filled up the turtle with water (it was emptied of sand when we moved.)

Hiding in the window seat.

They were all so intent that I couldn't get anyone to actually look at the camera.  While inside the house my kids play with sawdust and nails.  Outside they play with water and landscape rocks.

Luke's soccer season has started up again.  The boys really enjoy going to the games.
